Green Schools

The aim of Green-Schools is to increase students’ and participant awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies and to transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the school and also in the wider community. Schools that have successfully completed all the elements of the programme are awarded the ‘Green-Flag’.

Biodiversity – Green Flag Celebrations

Green Flags are an international symbol of a school’s environmental sustainability and are awarded to schools for their efforts in reducing waste, conserving water and energy and promoting sustainable travel to school. We were delighted to be awarded our 5th Green Flag in 2013 for the theme of “Biodiversity”. We are a green school and are very proud of the work the school does in this area.

Two surveys were carried out as well as two habitat maps drawn to show the increase in biodiversity over a two year period. Bird feeders, bird tables etc were placed at various points throughout the school and the school garden was extended. Curricular work centered on flowers, trees, plants and various aspects of nature. Our fifth Green Flag was raised by Mr Brendan Smith, the Education Outreach Officer with the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) in NUIG. Thank you Brendan !

Our Green School committee consists of teachers, students and parents all helping with events in the school, arranging trips, etc. This award is just another example of the spirit of co-operation in the school. Scoil Colmcille Naofa is proud of all of the children, their teachers and their families. Well done and thanks to everybody for all the hard work. Comhghairdeas!

Biodiversity

We are now working on our 5th Green Flag – BIODIVERSITY.  Biodiversity means everything that lives in or around our school.  We will be working on many projects over the next two years focussing on our local environment and how to protect it. We are undertaking lots of activities this year to improve the biodiversity of our school grounds.
